StressRelief Starts with Good Nutrition and Supplements
After years of personal use of over the counter supplements I have discovered AmeriSciences! AmeriSciences products provide an array of scientifically formulated nutrient combinations to help the body effectively cope with internal and external sources of stress. Nutrition can play a key role in either helping or hurting our physiological ability to respond and adapt to stress, so being mindful about what we put in our bodies can have a tremendous impact on our health. Supplementation may not only remedy clinical nutrient deficiencies, but most significantly, provide micronutrients such as cofactors, coenzymes, phytochemicals, vitamins and others, in optimal amounts that would otherwise prove difficult to obtain from the diet alone. A healthy mind and body starts with the right nutrition.
Micronutrients may help the endocrine, cardiovascular, neurological, and other systems associated with stress response. Many of these physiological reactions depend on the availability of specific micronutrients to effectively organize an appropriate response to such stress conditions. Whether caused by free radical formation or increased physical activity, the immune system, for example, depends on a readily available pool of omega-3 fatty acids to promote anti-inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Should these micronutrients be unavailable, the recourse is to promote inflammation through alternative fats.
Proper supplementation can mean the difference between a healthy stress response and an unhealthy one. Below are a list of specific stress related problems that can be addressed with proper nutritional supplementation.
- SLEEP: Valerian, thanks in part to its many components (valerinic acid, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, etc), reduces the amount of time that it takes to fall asleep, and is generally regarded as a mild tranquilizer for use during periods of restlessness and stress. Valerinic acid is believed to inhibit the catabolism of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), increasing GABA concentrations and decreasing central nervous system activity.
- ENERGY: B-vitamins play a critical role as cofactors in cellular energy metabolism, including glycolysis and the Kreb?s cycle. B-vitamin deficiency can cause fatigue and lethargy.
- ENERGY: Thiamin is involved in the release of acetylcholine, and both thiamin and riboflavin needs have been documented to increase during prolonged periods of stress (both physical and mental).
- ENERGY: Pyridoxine performs functions as a cofactor for about 70 different enzyme systems, many related to stress exposure.
- ENERGY: Pyridoxine, Folate and Cyanocobalamin are all involved in the metabolism of homocysteine; a by-product of metabolic stress.
- CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE: Oemga-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA competitively inhibit the pro-inflammatory series-2 prostaglandin and series-4 leukotriene synthesis. DHA appears to have mood-stabilizing properties, as it is incorporated into the phospholipid bi-layer membranes of neurons involved in neurotransmitter signaling. Though the mechanism remains unknown, EPA appears to have cardio protective effects and may play a role in maintaining the normal electric activity of the heart.
- ENERGY: Ginseng and its triterpenoid saponins, also known as ginsenosides, have been shown to improve mental performance during extended periods of physical and mental stress. Ginseng has also been shown to reduce normal insulin requirements ? potentially benefiting those with increase insulin secretion due to prolonged stress (not diabetes- or disease-related).
- IMMUNITY: Eleuthero intake has been associated with increased physical stamina, cognitive ability, immune-stimulating and -modulating effects under various stress models. Hypoglycemic and reduce insulin effects have also been demonstrated (not diabetes or disease-related).
- FOCUS & CONCENTRATION: Gingko biloba has antioxidant activity, as well as peripheral circulation-enhancing activity. It has been shown effective at improving the cognitive ability of normal-cognitive individuals under stressful conditions (i.e. students during exam season).
